Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I purchase large amounts of beneficial insects?

We offer bulk sales of many of our products, including ladybugs, praying mantis, nematodes, flea exterminator nematodes, VermiPods™, and ladybug nectar. Please contact us at (541) 213-9999 to place orders totaling over $500.00, International orders, or orders to Alaska. (No Praying Mantis can be shipped to Alaska due to USDA official order.) We are only able to ship to the continental United States via our online store.

Q. What days of the week do you ship?

All beneficial insects are shipped on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays each week (unless there is a UPS shipping holiday delay.) When a Nationally recognized holiday falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday we will be unable to ship that entire week, and any orders placed during that time will be shipped the following week if there are no other shipping delays to a holiday.

Due to the unpredictable temperatures at shipping warehouses, we will NOT ship any live products over the weekend. Any orders received after 12:00 pm PST will be shipped on the following shipping day.

Due to the nature of live products, at the discretion of Northwest Beneficials, shipping may be upgraded at the customer's expense due to extremely high or low temperatures along the shipping route. We will contact you if this is the case, so please include your phone number upon check out. Your privacy is very important to us, so phone numbers will not be used for any other purpose unless we receive your permission.

Q. Where do you ship?

We ship to locations within the continental United States through our online store. If you would like to have beneficial insects shipped to Alaska or internationally, please contact us directly.

No Praying Mantis can be shipped to Alaska due to USDA official order.

Q. Do you ship when it's very hot?

Due to the sensitive nature of live products, shipping may be upgraded at the customer's expense if extreme temperatures are expected along the shipping route. We will contact you if this is necessary, so please include your phone number at checkout. Your privacy is important to us, and your phone number will only be used for shipping-related communication unless you grant us permission for other uses.

Q. How should I store beneficial insects before release?

Keep beneficial insects in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If you receive them in a package, do not open it until you're ready for release. For specific storage instructions, refer to the product label or our website.

Q. What is the shelf life of your beneficial insects?

The shelf life varies by species. Generally, beneficial insects should be used as soon as possible after delivery for optimal effectiveness. Refer to the product specifics for detailed information.

Q. Are your products safe for pets and children?

Yes, our beneficial insects are a safe alternative to chemical pesticides and are non-toxic to pets and children when used as directed.

Q. What if my order arrives damaged or with dead insects?

If your order arrives damaged or contains dead insects (outside of expected losses due to life span), please contact us immediately with your order number and photos of the issue, and we will assist you in resolving the situation.

Product-Specific Questions

Ladybugs

Q. When should I release ladybugs?

It’s best to release ladybugs in the cool part of the day. Prime re- lease times are either the early morning hours or the evening, when temperatures are above freezing. Mist the area with water where you plan to release them, then cut off the top of the package and lay it at the base of the plants or hang their mesh bag on a limb where you want them . You can also sprinkle them in the desired area for more even coverage.

Q. How can I get the ladybugs to stay in my garden?

Ladybugs will remain in an area if there is sufficient food and water available. The ladybugs will immediately begin breeding and laying eggs in your garden, as soon as they are released. Once the pest population has been significantly reduced, the adult lady- bugs may move on, to allow the next generation to thrive after hatching. Keep an eye out for their larvae, called “alligators”! Dur- ing the larval stage they are veracious eaters and will continue to decimate the pest population. Once the ladybug larva have con- sumed a sufficient amount of pests they will pupate and then emerge shortly after as a adult ladybug, ready to start the cycle all over again. All while continuing to reduce the pest population in your garden. You can also add our Ladybug Nectar to your gar- den to farther encourage a resident population of ladybugs on your property.
